The project was comprised of the design and construction of 7km of motorway which links Stage 1 of the existing Townsville Ring Road from Riverway Drive in Condon through to Shaw Road in Bohle Plains, thus forming Stages 2 and 3 of the Ring Road.
The scope was subsequently increased to perform additional work on an extensive upgrade to Hervey Range Road. More specifically, Stage 2 (Condon Section) connects the bridge at Riverway Drive to Hervey Range Road and includes an overpass at Beck Drive, new bridges over the Bohle and Little Bohle Rivers and an off-ramp to improve access to Hervey Range Road.
A shared pedestrian and cycle path was also constructed in the Bohle Plains section extending through to the existing Hervey Range Road bridge which was retained and converted into a shared pathway. The Hervey Range Road upgrade formed a significant variation to the works and comprised the construction of two new bridges over the Bohle River and the construction of 4 lanes for a distance of 1.5km to the east to join adjacent 4-lane upgrade works.
The section west of the newly constructed bridges also required the widening of the road to 4 lanes for a stretch of almost 1km to avoid congestion, assisted by the installation of two traffic signal intersections and the provision of turning lanes. St. George Project Services was engaged to provide the roles of Senior Project Engineer and Quality Supervisor for the client – Department of Transport and Main Roads.
