Project Description

Townsville Street Circuit is a reminiscent of the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit. It winds its way through Reid Park where specially constructed roads form approximately 70 percent of the circuit.

Rod Nash Racing’s Paul Dumbrell suggested it is a high grip circuit. Ford Performance Racing (FPR) driver Mark Winterbottom suggested the circuit is like a standard racing circuit but in the middle of a city. It is a tough circuit that can catch drivers out. Winterbottom described the first corner is almost a clone to the turn eight at Adelaide Street Circuit which he tackled it very aggressively because it looks high speed with great passing opportunity. The circuit quickly became a favourite of the V8 supercars’ drivers. The circuit’s pit building is a permanent construction that can be used all year round for all sorts of events. There are five viewing mounds and grandstands that can seat approximately 12,000.

On 28 July 2008, the official V8 Supercar website reported that the Queensland Sports Minister, Judy Spence, said the State Government will contribute $2.5 million annually for the first five years of the event. The 2009 Dunlop Townsville 400 was held from 10–12 July. Sucrogen is the naming rights sponsor the race in 2010 and 2011.

Project Description

The project was comprised of the design and construction of 7km of motorway which links Stage 1 of the existing Townsville Ring Road from Riverway Drive in Condon through to Shaw Road in Bohle Plains, thus forming Stages 2 and 3 of the Ring Road.

The scope was subsequently increased to perform additional work on an extensive upgrade to Hervey Range Road. More specifically, Stage 2 (Condon Section) connects the bridge at Riverway Drive to Hervey Range Road and includes an overpass at Beck Drive, new bridges over the Bohle and Little Bohle Rivers and an off-ramp to improve access to Hervey Range Road.

A shared pedestrian and cycle path was also constructed in the Bohle Plains section extending through to the existing Hervey Range Road bridge which was retained and converted into a shared pathway. The Hervey Range Road upgrade formed a significant variation to the works and comprised the construction of two new bridges over the Bohle River and the construction of 4 lanes for a distance of 1.5km to the east to join adjacent 4-lane upgrade works.

The section west of the newly constructed bridges also required the widening of the road to 4 lanes for a stretch of almost 1km to avoid congestion, assisted by the installation of two traffic signal intersections and the provision of turning lanes. St. George Project Services was engaged to provide the roles of Senior Project Engineer and Quality Supervisor for the client – Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Project Description

The Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor (TEARC) project is a proposed rail freight line which would connect the North Coast rail line directly into the Port of Townsville.

The proposed corridor would branch off from the North Coast Line at Cluden, south of Townsville, running parallel to the Port Access Road into the Port.

Potential benefits of the project include:

  • Allowing 1.4 km long trains to access the Port of Townsville. Currently train lengths are limited to 1000 m on the Mt Isa line and 650 m on the North Coast line.
  • Create capacity for the growing tonnage demand on the Mt Isa rail system, a critical link between the mines in the North West Queensland Minerals Province and the Port.
  • Improve traffic flow in the city centre by reducing the number of freight trains that use the current line.

Project Description

The Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade project will:

    • replace the Horseshoe Lagoon, Pink Lily and Haughton River bridges with new, wider, higher-level bridges
    • build new crossings of Healey’s Lagoon and the Reed Beds curve
    • upgrade 13.5km of the Bruce Highway (on approach to, and between the bridges), in some areas on a new alignment
    • construct 2 highway overpasses of the nearby cane tramway network, removing the existing open-level crossings
    • upgrade rural intersections within the project area to improve safety
    • install wide centre line treatments (similar to other Bruce Highway projects) to increase the distance between oncoming lanes of traffic and reduce the risk of head-on collisions.

This project is part of the 15-year Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, a $12.6 billion program of works to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity along the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns. The project is set to be completed in mid-2020 permitting the weather and construction program.
